Writers & their drinks

I get pretty bored with the fetishization of famous writers' lives, as if their banal routines might hold some secret key to their output. That we might all be Beckett if we were to prefer our eggs poached, or something like that. But I'll make an easy exception for cocktails. Not because I think they hold creative secrets, but - after all - cocktails are built for sharing. And who wouldn't want to drink with this guy?

Anyway, these great cocktails come from Port, one of my new favourite sites, where you'll also find the recipes and other information. The photography is by Liz Seabrook.

  1. This is fun. Interesting how they all seemed to like super sweet drinks, especially Hemmingway. I would've imagined he'd prefered something more "manly." ha!

Happy to have found your blog.

    1. well, it does say "He drank them in glasses as large as vases, and boasted that he once drank sixteen in one sitting." -- machismo intact, I reckon.

    2. True. I suppose it doesn't get much more manly than consuming 16 large vases of alcohol.

  3. I'm clapping my hands in delight here Jane...I must rewatch Midnight In Paris...despite feeling like I'd been hit over the head with a hammer of schmaltz...I really enjoyed it...Owen Wilson...just looking at his facial expressions here makes me giggle :) Big thanks for the heads up on Port...if I hadn't already been won over with the cocktails page...the bould Mr Ferrell as cover boy on the latest edition would have done it for sure. It will be winging its way in the post to me once I finish posting this comment.
Thank you for such a merry interlude this sunny crisp morning in Sandymount.

    1. Thanks Doreen - I ordered a couple of the back issues of Port too (Cillian Murphy yesss!) The contributor line-up looks amazing. Hope it's as great as it looks.
