I haven't been shopping a lot lately... I've set some ambitious savings goals for the next six months and it means I'm staying as far away from the shops as possible. Still, the change in seasons brings out new desires; a tea pot, a scented candle. Mostly, I draw from things I already own — blankets come out of closets, favourite mugs are held for a little longer, allowing the warmth infuse my fingertips as I deeply inhale.
I love when new things come in to my home to mix with old, that transformation that takes place from an object to a personal belonging. I'm never comfortable with new things until that process is complete, until I no longer see the object but an extension of myself, my home.
Exactly - that's why I have never like conspicuously branded things, even the Chanel logo is too much for me! (not that I'm tempted much). I always remember the scene in Back to the Future where his past family thinks his name is Calvin Klein because it's woven into the elastic of his underpants.
Beautiful choices. I need the perfect 2-cup teapot and you've inspired me to do a serious search. I have a weakness for nice soaps--that's my regular smallish indulgence.
Oh, you've answered my dilemma! This is how dense I am: I drink my tea from Nicholas Mosse cups--my husband used to get me some of his pottery every year for Christmas, so I have tea cups, dessert plates and a large plate I put tea breads on. I was going to look for a pot to go with them. I am so dense, it didn't even occur to me that he would have pots! Thank you.
Haha! awesome! Do you know which pattern you'll get? I have a hard time deciding... I love the assorted landscape pattern and have some mugs from this series...
I just looked at the Heath teapot--so sweet, I love it! The Emma B's are wonderful too--I love the polka dots, but they would clash with my Mosse teacups (which have animals on them).
It's so pretty. It's the kind of thing I'd buy because I love it so much but then would struggle to wear because I'm really not that romantic woman I wish to be!
Hello Jane, this post really "touched" all my senses, particularly the Rooibos Tea soap. I can just picture sitting at the kitchen table in Johannesburg with my mum and a fragrant cup of Rooibos tea. Thank you as always for your beautiful posts.

yes, soap and tea are two indulgences that I can allow myself. Just impulse shopped the pomegranate soap at Santa Maria Novella the other day, it fragrances my whole bathroom.
A beautiful mosaic in soft and pleasing colours. Soap and candles forever tempt me. Good luck with your saving plan. Many years past, my sister who lived here, wanted to save to return to Ireland. We opened a "joint bank account" separate from our everyday bank accounts and it was a wonderful incentive. Even on weeks where we felt we could not save, we managed to deposit at least $20. It became a habit.

I've just moved to a new apartment, and have been having those sorts of feelings (although I haven't been able to articulate them as well as you have): it's so nice to see my good old butter-dish-shaped-like-a-lion on the kitchen counter every morning, but I'm not sure I've really connected yet with the new shower curtain.

Thanks so much Caroline! It is a difficult thing to express and something I struggle with when I blog products... it's usually because I see that potential "belonging" in something (whether I buy it or not) and not a more shallow material drive, though I'm not sometimes sure that comes across.

ReplyDeleteI'm the same - there are very few conspicuous brands that I like. I have a softspot for Hermes scarves (though I don't own any) but that's about it.
